Do-It Leisure :
About
Program Overview
Do-It Leisure offers a wide range of social, recreational, and wellness-focused activities designed to bring people together and support confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging. Programs include community outings, social recreation groups, dances, workshops, excursions, and special events that encourage connection, fun, and personal growth.
Activities are designed to meet participants where they are, offering inclusive opportunities that promote friendship, wellness, and meaningful community engagement.
Program History
Do-It Leisure was founded in 1975 as the Do-It Leisure Co-op, a community-based effort created to provide meaningful recreational and social opportunities for people with developmental disabilities in Butte County. At a time when inclusive leisure programming was limited, the program began as a cooperative initiative involving Chico State University and community partners, with an emphasis on adapted and instructional recreation that supported social connection, wellness, and community participation.
In the years leading up to its merger with the Work Training Center, the organization shortened its name to Do-It Leisure. In 1981, Do-It Leisure merged with Work Training Center and became part of WTC’s continuum of services. Over time, the program expanded to include Independent Living Skills, social recreation groups, community outings, dances, excursions, and camps.
While some services are funded through Far Northern Regional Center referrals, many extracurricular and social activities are participant-paid or supported through fundraising, grants, and community donations.
In 2025, Do-It Leisure proudly celebrated over 50 years of service in Butte County. This milestone reflects decades of partnership with participants, families, community organizations, and supporters who have helped ensure that adults with developmental disabilities have access to inclusive, enriching leisure opportunities.
